Correction: Corrects Rob Price's title.
While it may not be a widely touted measure of consumer sentiment on Wall Highway, demand is indeed running high for exquisitely designed, unused fruit baskets this holiday season, said Rob Price, president of Edible Arrangements.
"We are extremely pleased to see that people are trading up to more exciting arrangements, more exotic arrangements, but also some of our new dipped-fruit varieties," said Price, adding that on the inflation front, the price of strawberries has spiked in recent months, but costs own in general remained stable.
Edible Arrangements, founded in in East Haven, Conn., is the world's largest franchiser of shops offering fresh-cut fruit arrangements, with more than 1, independently owned and operated franchise locations worldwide.
Select Edible Arrangements locations also carry the company's "Edible To Go" line of unused fruit smoothies, dipped fruit, freshly squeezed juices and sundaes. Price said he is looking to add up to 70 new locations in the U.S. next year. He is also looking to add a few dozen more stores in China which he called his top international growth market.
As to why a potential franchisee would opt for an Edible Arrangements store, as opposed to a quick food restaurant or some other enterprise, Price said the business-to-business gifting arena is a huge area of growth and attractive to potential store operators.
Of course, the gifting or present basket market is crowded, but Price does not feel constrained by his competition, whether it be (FLWS) — Get Report , Etsy(ETSY) — Get Report or Jamba(JMBA) — Get Report on the smoothie front.
"Whether it's smoothies or whether it is our dipped fruit or an arrangement, the one thing about our product is that it is simple to share and simple to add to an occasion," said Price. "It also has the gifting element to it, where there is visual beauty, where it creates a genuine conversation piece at a party."
Finally, Price admitted that Edible Arrangements has seen a number of inquiries from investment bankers seeking to take the company public, but correct now, he is focusing on growing the business.
"If there are some major growth opportunities for us that might require public financing, it's something I suspect that could be considered in the future," said Price.
"But we are blessed that the trade is strong and vibrant and growing enough that it is not a necessity for the growth of our business."

- Cueball: Yeah, true.
- [Megan gestures with an open hand]
- Megan: But my question is, why did they call it «Edible Arrangements» and not «Vore of the Roses»?
- [Pan to just Megan.
Megan turns to face Cueball]
- Cueball: Just for that, I’m going to cancel the one I got you.
- Megan: Nooo! I desire my Mouth Blossoms!
- Megan: My Juicy Bouquet! My Oral Floral!

Mike Rotondo has a knack for joining brands with devoted followings.
His latest, Edible Arrangements, has been a gifting concept of choice for customers for almost two decades. But what do you do when that focus shifts, and 90 percent customer awareness levels lag the company’s evolution? Well, you hire Mike Rotondo.
In early July, the more than 1,unit brand tapped Rotondo, the previous chief executive at Tropical Smoothie Café, as its CEO. Tariq Farid served as Edible’s leader since its founding in in East Haven, Connecticut. Over the final few years, Edible has looked to transition from a strict gifting focus into a gifting and treats brand, launching items such as Dipped Fruit, Froyo Fruit Blends, and Smoothies as part of its “Edible Treats,” lineup.
“I knew I could bring to them more of that [quick-service restaurant] and customer interaction, store-traffic type of discipline,” says Rotondo, who joined Tropical Smoothie as VP of operations in He was promoted to COO in and CEO the following July.
Rotondo believes there’s unique chance at hand with Edible.
It’s hard to discover a densely populated market in America where a journey to work doesn’t involve passing an Edible or two.
Historically, though, customers weren’t picking up the phone or stopping by unless there was a specific reason—Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and so on. For a snapshot, some of Edible’s operators typically see sales increases of more than 3, percent on Valentine’s Day. This past February 14, the chain delivered more than million strawberries, , pieces of pineapple, 66, pounds of grapes, and , bunches of kale.
Edible wants to evolve the conversation. And Rotondo says he was brought in to figure out how.
«I’ve closely followed Mike’s career over the past decade at Tropical Smoothie, and when the time came to bring in a CEO, I knew he would be perfect for the role,” Farid said in an earlier statement, adding he would now focus on growing Edible Brands, the concept’s parent company, in a role that includes technology, supply chain, and other businesses, as well as the Edible Arrangements brand.
«This is an exciting time at Edible and I am confident that Mike’s deep experience in [quick service] and gifting will bring our vision of the new Edible to life.”
Rotondo worked at Baskin-Robbins through high school and college, and joined Wendy’s as an assistant manager before working his way up to district manager. He clocked time at HoneyBaked Ham and Arby’s, and arrived at Tropical Smoothie following a similar role at Grand Wraps. He brings to Edible fairly a track record from Tropical Smoothie, especially in regards to franchising success.
This past year, the smoothie brand said its top 50 percent of franchise owners had average gross sales north of $,—a 30 percent increase over the final four years.
Same-store sales are up a whopping 36 percent over the past five, and more than units own opened, bringing the entire to about At $,, he also left Tropical Smoothie operators with the highest systemwide average-unit volume in the company’s year history.
To capture the turnaround, Tropical Smoothie’s comp sales were below about 6 percent in —the year Rotondo came on board.
They fell another 2 percent in , with AUVs just around $, The year he was appointed CEO, BIP Capital invested in Tropical Smoothie. By , same-store sales were up percent, year-over-year, and the brand signed franchise agreements. It inked in
Rotondo says in the first six months at Edible, his No. 1 task will be “getting the franchisees aligned with the vision of the brand.”
This is the first of two comics in a row about presents, and it is also the final comic released before Christmas Day.
This is the first Christmas comic of , with Christmas Presents being the second Christmas comic, released on Christmas Day.
Edible Arrangements is a company that sells fruit, and other edible items that own been cut and arranged to glance love flower bouquets.
They can be ordered and sent to a given recipient for a variety of purposes. Flower arrangements are typically not eaten, as showy flowers are so economically inefficient to mass produce that modern culture has forgotten they are edible.
In the first panel, Cueball seems to discover the concept incongruous, and wonders how it came about. Megan points out the simple answer: picking out a present for someone can be hard, but a tasteful meal is always welcome so endless as it’s something the recipient can eat safely, and the visual appearance of an edible arrangement offers further appeal.
Shortly afterwards, Megan uses the same incongruity of eating a floral arrangement to make puns. Vore of the Roses is a frolic on the War of the Roses, either the English civil war or the movie of the same name. ‘Vore’ is a expression part referring to eating, as in carnivore (meat eater), herbivore (plant eater), voracious (hungry or eating a lot), etc.
Cueball is probably in pain because of the bad pun and says he will cancel the edible arrangement that he had bought for Megan. She tries to convince him otherwise by providing alternative names, which are evidently not any more to his liking, since he has left Megan before she finishing every her suggestions.
Mouth Blossoms, Juicy Bouquet, and Oral Floral are every combinations referencing the eating of a floral arrangement. In theory, these combinations could be excellent names for a band, or possibly a tumblr blog.
The title text also makes reference to the fact that numerous flowers that are often found in floral arrangements, such as roses, violets, tulips, daisies, lavender and numerous more, are items that a human can eat. Such flowers are safe to consume but generally unappetizing; Randall makes the point that if a person is sufficiently hungry and thus doesn’t care how appetizing their meal is, any floral arrangement can be eaten. Since he doesn’t use flower in the title text, he actually says that if you are hungry enough anything can be eaten.
The title text may also be an allusion to a Mitch Hedberg joke: «Any book is a children’s book if the kid can read!»
This reads love a tumblr shitpost rather than a xkcd comic shudders How often do typos show up in XKCD comics («Edible Arrangements is a thing» versus «Edible Arrangements are a thing»)? Capncanuck (talk) , 23 December (UTC)
- It’s not a typo. Randall is referring to the concept of Edible Arrangements, not a collection of edible arrangements.
, 23 December (UTC)
- I see what you mean. Should there own been quotes around the terms in the first panel then? Capncanuck (talk) , 23 December (UTC)
- Nevermind, it’s a company name. no quotes needed. Capncanuck (talk) , 23 December (UTC)
- I see what you mean. Should there own been quotes around the terms in the first panel then? Capncanuck (talk) , 23 December (UTC)
«Any arrangement is an edible arrangement if you’re hungry enough.» — and you own enough mustard. Happy Winter Solstice Everyone! , 24 December (UTC)
Any reason to assume a connection to vorarephilia rather than the common suffix «-vore» for «eating» or «swallowing», as in carnivore, herbivore, insectivore, etc.
(and obviously the non-philia part of vorarephilia)? «Vore» may get used as slang/abbreviation for vorarephilia, but in this context I’d own thought the suffix was more the intent. I, at least, was unaware of the slang; possibly Randall was too, but I’d claim the philia is a bit obscure compared with the «vore» etymology. I wouldn’t desire to «correct» this without someone having the chance to make the argument the other way, though.
Fluppeteer (talk) , 24 December (UTC)
- Yes, I’m amused by (though am not necessarily disputing) the assertion that vore is «often» used as slang for vorarephilia. I’ve not encountered situations where a shortened version is needed to hold conversation flowing smoothly. , 24 December (UTC)Pat
- The term «vore» is used in various search engines, since «vorarephilia» is hard to spell. The Second Life platform has several areas where avatars can participate in «vore» simulations. (It’s a bit disconcerting to stumble across these things) , 24 December (UTC)
- It does seem to be the primary use of «vore» as a stand-alone expression, I’d just assumed that Randall thought he was coining the use as part of his pun.
Search engines (with some trepidation) do seem to offer the «-vore» suffix as well. Not to attempt to appropriate the expression from the vore community Oh well, I learnt something, but I still ponder anthropomorphizing a flower arrangement in order to make the interpretation make sense is a teer (talk) , 24 December (UTC)
- Vorarephilia (vore) is a reasonably established/famous Weird Internet Thing. I’d be astonished if Randall wasn’t aware of that usage of the term. —Anomylous (talk) , 25 December (UTC)
- I wasn’t (vorarephilia, yes; term, no), but then there are a lot of memes I don’t know about — love I said, I learned something, which happens with the best of Randall’s comics and this site.
No objection to the version at time of writing (mentioning both), teer (talk) , 27 December (UTC)
- I wonder how endless ago the expression «vore» was coined that way. Back in the 90’s a friend of mine was in a local metal band called «Vore» but they always explained it using the expression «Carnivore». Maybe there was something I never knew about them , 13 January (UTC)
The opening scenes of Roger Corman’s original «Little Store of Horrors» has a customer order a floral arrangement, and leaves the store eating the blossoms. , 24 December (UTC)
Aren’t flowers meant for decoration sprayed with insecticides/fungicides etc. not fit for consumption? So the flower itself might be edible, the various ‘icide’s aren’t.
(Though of course literally anything can be eaten at least once in a lifetime) , 24 December (UTC)
- Wouldn’t that be similar to how you are expected to wash fruit and vegetables before eating to remove pesticides? — Hkmaly (talk) , 27 December (UTC)
Any thought if «Juicy Bouquet» rhymes better in Randallesian dialect than it does in mine? (Where «Oral Floral» definitely does well on that score.) It seems too shut to be not intended to own that effect, yet too far away in my accent to come ‘naturally’.
(I discover it far more convenient to mispronounce «Juic(+a+)y» to match «Bouquet» than to match «Bouque(>y<)» to any halfway normal «Juicy». And there seems no obvious middle-ground to send both to.) , 25 December (UTC)
Is it clear from the date that this is about Christmas presents, so that this should be included in the Christmas category? —Kynde (talk) , 25 December (UTC)
«Juicy bouquet» could be a frolic on the «Juicy Couture» brand name as opposed to any sort of rhyming attempt. , 26 December (UTC)
Randall has referenced vore before, six years ago in comic Aversion Fads, that reference to the Lion and the Mouse was not about bondage and that explanation could use an updateSillvy (talk) , 27 December (UTC)
- Within the furry fandom vore has it’s own meaning that’s neither a suffix nor a philia, sort of a convince the guardian spirit to take the being between you and the world thing literally thing.
- During the aversion fad time protecting the fandom’s reputation and not mentioning the weird stuff was a large deal.
Now that that is over, mentioning the weird stuff, particularly vore, is a furry in-joke.
Is it just me that thinks «Oral flora» and «Mouth bouquet» both sound love euphemisms for oral thrush or similar? —OliReading (talk) , 11 January (UTC)
