Diy polymer clay ideas

Just as there are excellent sealers on the market, there are also some bad ones. Hold in mind that numerous of these own been used by numerous people without any ill effects. But they are also known for having unsatisfactory results as well.

Future Floor Finish, which is now called Pledge Floor Care (and is extremely similar to the European product Klear) is a extremely clear, thin, watery finish that is favorite of beginning polymer clay artists. It gives a nice glossy finish, dries clear, smells grand, and is readily available. I used it when I first started and I dont really own much bad to tell about it, except that its not extremely durable.

There are better options, such as any of the sealers I mentioned above. Its still a excellent sealer for things that wont get any wear, such as figurines and models. But for jewelry, it just dulls below way too fast.

Liquitex Varnish, which I own previously recommended, is an artists varnish that comes in gloss, matte, and satin finishes. My tests show, however, that it has lots of brush strokes, turns cloudy on dark colors, and is sticky on some brands of clay. There are better options, such as Varathane or Pearl Ex Varnish.

Dimensional glazes are thick, clear one-part glazes which can be applied thickly to create a glossy, glass-like finish.

Some are better than others, but every of them can turn cloudy over time. I ponder that humidity is a factor. Some brands are Triple Thick, Diamond Glaze, Dimensional Magic, and Aleenes Jewelry and Pendant Gel. I own found that every of them turn sticky on at least one brand of clay. Aleenes did show excellent results on every clay besides Fimo, however, so you might attempt it. For every person who recommends Triple Thick, I read of another one who says it gets sticky or cloudy. And the reviews Ive read of Dimensional Magic are unhappy. I dont love reading of peoples projects being ruined by a material that was used properly! Success is just too variable with these glazes for me to recommend them universally, aside from Aleenes.

Nail Polish is often recommended as a paint or glaze by articles in craft blogs.

Almost always there will be tears later because the plasticizer in polymer clay softens the polish, making it turn gooey over time. That is, if it dries at every. The thing is, it can be rather hit and miss, perhaps due to the brand of clay or nail polish. It does work often enough that people not knowledgeable in polymer clay will not see whats incorrect with recommending it, and the next person isnt so lucky! If I had a dollar for every email I answer on this one.

Oil-based Varnishes will often work on polymer clay but will yellow noticeably with time.

Cindy Leitz tested Minwax oil-based polyurethane and found that there were no compatibility issues with polymer clay, but it did yellow. This is most noticeable on white clay, of course. Cindys result does show the worth of testing and making samples. Dont just randomly grab any can of varnish from the hardware store shelf.

Mod Podge is a glue and decoupage medium that crafters own relied on for working with paper for as endless as I can remember.

Craft blogs also sometimes recommended it as a sealer for polymer clay. Just dont do it. No. Mod Podge is actually made from the same stuff as plain white glue. Its not a genuine sealer. You wouldnt jacket your beads in glue, would you? Again, some people own excellent results with this. But for most of us Mod Podge gets sticky and cloudy in humidity. Just tell no.

Spray sealers can also own unpredictable and disappointing results. Sometimes the finish never dries, other times it turns soft and sticky months later.

It seems that the plasticizer in baked polymer clay can soften the spray varnish, so even a excellent trustworthy brand of liquid varnish might not work so well in the spray form on polymer clay. If you need a spray, do yourself a favor and order some PYM II. Its one of the few sprays that I know of which is absolutely safe to use with polymer clay. Your mileage may vary, of course. I tested 10 diverse brands of spray sealers and found that only PYM had universally excellent results on every the brands of clay that I tried.

When NOT to Seal Polymer Clay

Sealers and varnishes are amazing tools to be used when the time is correct.

But there are reasons why trying to seal your project might not be a excellent thought. Here are a few reasons.

  • Because most polymer clay varnishes are, themselves, a helpful of thin plastic coating, they can often be peeled from the project if you attempt hard enough. If the product will get lots of abuse, a varnish might not be strong enough.
  • Many sealers, varnishes, and coatings turn sticky or cloudy over time, ruining your project. What works for one person might extremely well not work for another. Unless you know how your chosen sealer is going to act, and unless youre certain you need to be using a sealer in the first put, it might be better to reconsider.

Always test some samples before using a sealer on something thats irreplaceable.

  • When making glass-like items, using a gloss sealer is not a substitute for creating a smooth item in the first put. Applying a glossy jacket over the top of a project full of tool marks and fingerprints will just accentuate them rather than camouflage them, making your project glance sloppy and unprofessional.
  • Using a sealer on a highly textured item can go badly incorrect. I remember waxing my dads pickup when I was about I got wax on the black plastic trim.

Of course it turned white in the grooves. Bad memories! Polymer clay is no diverse. Wax is grand for smooth surfaces, but it will collect in the little crevices of a textured item and glance terrible. Liquid varnish such as Varathane will also collect or pool in highly textured areas, leading to a glance that extremely much wasnt what you had in mind. You can seal textured items with a varnish, but you own to be careful in your application.

    Dont just slather it on!

Use the Correct Sealer for your Project

There are lots of types of polymer clay sealers and glazes. I use a diverse sealer depending on the effect I desire to achieve in my finished piece. There are numerous excellent varnishes, finishes, and sealers out there, and I havent tried them every by any means! But here are some tried and true sealers that I can heartily recommend.

For a Natural, Burnished Look

If you love the glance and feel of polymer clay thats been sanded to a extremely high grit and buffed, you will love the way that adding a jacket of wax makes those pieces feel and glance.

Renaissance Wax is a favorite brand of high quality wax that has a grand marketing program and a price tag to match. Dont get me incorrect, I love Ren Wax. But desire to know a secret? Paste Wax and Neutral shoe polish will work just the same and own a MUCH better price. Remember, wax doesnt work well on items with a fine texture (such as when you use sandpaper or a sponge to disguise fingerprints). The wax will collect in the pits and glance awful.

Matte Sealers

Translucent Liquid Sculpey is another brand of liquid clay but this has a matte finish when cured.

To get this effect, use a cosmetic sponge to dab the TLS onto your piece, then oven cure. Do not cure with a heat gun or the effect wont be matte.

Cernit Matte Varnish gives a nice, smooth, dry finish on every brands of clay. Its not terribly matte, but does give a low-sheen satin finish that looks and feels great.

DuraClear Ultra Matte Varnish is a dead matte varnish that has no sheen at every. It performs beautifully on every brands of clay except for Kato.

Glossy Sealers

Varathane is a brand name of polyurethane varnish available in the US.

It has been a favorite varnish with polymer clay artists for numerous years. It does come in gloss, semi-gloss, and satin, but I discover that even the satin is still beautiful glossy. I wrote an article about Varathane describing why its my favorite sealer and giving sources (including non-US brands of polyurethane).

Pearl Ex Varnish is made by the same company as the well-known mica powders. But this is just a varnish. It works nicely on every brands of clay, but doesnt give a super glossy finish.

Aleenes Jewelry Pendant Gel is a glossy dimensional glaze that can be used on most clays, but avoid using it on Fimo as it can get sticky.

Epoxy Resin is a clear, thick coating that is gaining popularity among polymer clayers, for excellent reason.

It is exceedingly strong and durable, more so than any other finish. But it has a endless cure time, takes some practice to get used to using, and is known for causing swear words. But once you get the hang of it, it works extremely nicely. Favorite brands are ICE Resin, Envirotex Lite, and Magic Glos (a brand of UV-cure resin).

Kato Liquid Polyclay can be used as a sealer. Just brush or sponge on a thin coating and then cure in the oven. After oven curing, you can use a heat gun to further cure it to give a crystal-clear, glossy finish.

For Sealing Delicate of Textured Surfaces

Sometimes the act of brushing or rubbing on a sealer can disturb surface treatments such as mica powders.

And a sealer can actually dissolve the surface treatment, love happens when you put Varathane onto alcohol inks. And sometimes you do desire to seal finely textured surfaces without getting air bubbles or pooling. In these cases a spray varnish would be grand, but most spray varnishes can cause polymer clay to become sticky over time. There are two brands of spray varnish that are completely clay safe and really gives a grand effect. PYM II is one brand, and Helmar Crystal Kote Matte is another. They sets and stabilizes mica powders and can assist seal alcohol inks with a quick, light jacket. After that, you can layer subsequent coats to give a thicker seal or you can use another type of sealer.

Yes, you can use Varathane or Ren Wax over the top of PYM II and Helmar.

  1. And if your oven tends to run boiling, hold a extremely shut eye on them, or they might burn.

Believe me, I ruined a whole batch because my oven was too boiling and I left them in too long!

  2. Start by preheating your oven to º and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper. Create your clay shapes using one of the clay techniques I shared on this blog post.

  3. Then, for every earring shapes, put on a baking sheet and bake for approximately minutes. Make certain the clay is completely flat, otherwise you’ll run into problems when you add your earring posts.

  4. This is where you will join them together later.

The earring post alone may not make a large enough hole for the jump rings, so wiggle it around a bit to magnify the piercing a little.

  5. For any earrings that you’ll be using jump rings for, this would be the time to create the holes needed To do that, take one of the earring posts, and use the sharp finish to gently create holes at the top of each shape (and the bottom if applicable).

  6. Remove the earrings from the oven and let them cool. It’s okay if they feel a tiny bit gummy while still boiling, just as endless as they hold their shape when you pick them up.

  7. For adding jump rings Use your pliers to thread a jump ring into the little circular pieces, and then into the hole or holes you created for the clay shapes.

Make certain you shut off the opening so the earring doesn’t come apart while wearing.

  8. For adding posts to earring shapes Put a dab of super glue at the top and add your earring post. Hold firmly for about 30 seconds to make certain it completely adheres.

  9. Take it Further There are lots of additional things you can do to add to your earrings. Love adding tassels with embroidery floss, using hoops instead of posts, creating more organic shapes, marbling bright colors together, etc, etc.

This question is asked by most newbies to polymer clay. The answer isnt as simple as it seems.

It depends on numerous factors, from the brand of clay to the temperature and time it was cured at.

One factor of flexibility depends upon how thick you make the item. They every flex when extremely thin, less than 1/16 of an nch. Of them Kato is the most flexible, then Fimo, Fimo Soft, Premo, and finally Sculpey III. In general, do not use Sculpey III if the item needs to flex after baking. It tends to be brittle at any thickness. Sculpey also produces Bake-n-Bend which is a flexible clay. No matter what brand you use, they every must be properly conditioned by hand kneading or by putting the clay through a pasta machine. Remember that conditioned clays will need reconditioning if left unused for several days.

While Sculpey III is one of the most brittle of the polymer clays.

After baking, Bake-n-Bend will become brittle over time. Stir 1 part Premo to 1 Part Bake n Bend for a more durable yet flexible product. For even greater flexibility add 1 part Kato Clay to the stir. Pure Kato or Premo should do the occupation if cured properly. To give you an thought, if you stir Premo 50/50 with Bake and Bend, the result can be extruded for snakes flexible enough to crochet. If that is more flex than you desire, attempt Kato and Premo in a 50/50 stir. To avoid breakage be certain to cure at a high enough temp for at least the manufacturers recommended temp and time. Any longer than that and the clay wont be as flexible.

If you own mixed clay brands it is safe to bake at the higher temperature for the recommended time.

Polymer clay is also pliable correct after it comes out of the oven. You can twist and bend it into the desired shape then cool it under running water to set the shape. You can also cut tube beads after removal from the oven to hold distortion polymer clay is under cured it will degrade over plasticizers will leach from the middle to the outer need to be extremely certain youre curing at the correct temperature. If you dont own a freestanding oven thermometer you should get one.

Large Lots, dollar stores and Wal Mart type places own them for around $ stand/hang in your oven on the rack, (not a probe or anything love that) It is always significant to use one of those in any oven you bake in to get the temperature correct before you put in your uring is thought to cause cracks in beabds and such. There may be cases where people recommend putting clay into a freezing oven and heating it to the max temperature and leaving the items to cool before taking them out (some ancient timers tell this method is excellent for beads that may crack while baking), but some own found that toaster ovens spike while it preheats, which can burn clay. Convection ovens own been used with success also.

Never use a microwave to cure polymer clay.

I love trees, which you frequent readers already know. Nature is so beautiful. I was thinking over the weekend about some nature-inspired jewelry, and while this glance isnt every that earthy, its an simple technique that you can implement really inexpensively with some polymer clay and leaves.

What you will need:

  1. Polymer clay and roller, possibly a clay cutter depending on your design idea
  2. Small leaves
  3. Jump ring and chain
  4. Optional acrylic paint and sealer (like Sculpey Gloss Glaze)

You only need just a little bit of clay for this project, so leftovers work grand.

If your clay is new, though, you will need to condition it by rolling it for a few minutes until is softens. I love to work with clay on wax paper or parchment paper to protect my work surface.

Roll it out to about 1/4 inch. press your little leaf into the clay, vein side/backside toward the clay, then flip your clay over and roll it out a little. The reason I propose flipping it over is so your leaf cant move. I learned not to attempt to roll your clay out any flatter here it will break your leaf apart and make it harder to remove.

I was still capable to work with it, but keeping it intact is neater and faster every the way around.

Now, peel your leaf off. You can see where mine wasnt capable to stretch when I rolled my clay, so I just had a little additional work to gently remove every the pieces. Use a toothpick if this happens to you.

Now, trim your clay to the size pendant you desire. I opted for a 1 1/2 inch circle. This is actually a cookie cutter that I snagged for my clay supplies kitchen and cookie utensils work awesome for polymer clay with one disclaimer: once you own used them for clay, do NOT use them for food again, they are no longer food safe.

I recommend you hit up thrift stores or yard sales for an ancient rolling pin or cookie cutters to frolic with clay its much cheaper than the new supplies you will discover in the clay aisle of your craft store and work every bit as well, but dont use your regular kitchen gear to frolic with clay.

When I cut it, I went for an offset glance. You can middle yours is you love I just liked this!

Poke a hole in your pendant with a toothpick (or a drink stirrer also works well) and lay it on a baking sheet. I would recommend the same thing here repurpose an ancient baking sheet just for your clay projects to be safe!

Now, bake it according to the package instructions.

This will vary by brand, but what you can expect is that it will take about 30 minutes for each 1/4 inch thick your pendant is in a low-temperature oven.

Once its baked and cooled, you can add some paint if you love to assist add contrast! I didnt annoy with a paintbrush, I just used a bit of paper towel to jacket my pendant with paint (making certain every the cracks were totally painted).

Then, with a bit of damp paper towel, I wiped off the excess pain from the surface, leaving the paint just in the leaf veins. If you wipe off too much, just attempt again. :) You can add some Sculpey Gloss if you desire to seal it with a shiny finish, but thats totally optional.

Then, when its dry, just add a jump ring and chain!

Now you can wear a little bit of nature!

You could attempt this same technique with flowers or other types of leaves, or turn these into present tags or other kinds of jewelry, too! There are a lot of ways to use a beautiful natural imprint!

If you read or follow any polymer clay groups and forums, youll notice that one of the most common questions asked is Which polymer clay sealer should I use? Everyone has their favorite sealer, and the answers differ depending on your need and the availability of products where you live.

But perhaps were asking the incorrect question. I ponder the first question needs to be, Do You Own to Seal Polymer Clay?

Do you own to seal polymer clay?

  1. Use a varnish to change the gloss level of your project.
  2. You dont own to seal polymer clay. Baked polymer clay is durable plastic and therefore more durable than any sealer.
  3. Use a varnish to protect fragile surface treatments such as chalk, pigment, or mica.
  4. Sealers and varnishes will not prevent breakage. If your projects are brittle, address your baking process.
  5. Many varnishes make polymer clay sticky. See here for more info.
  6. Spray varnishes are almost always incompatible with polymer clay.
  7. For a glass-like finish on plain polymer clay, sanding and buffing is an excellent option.

How to Make Clay Earrings: Basic Techniques

Im sharing a couple diverse techniques to assist get you started, but the best part about these materials is that you can literally create any style, color, or shape of earring you desire – there are extremely few limitations, which makes the project so enjoyment, and honestly, so relaxing.

Before you start working with the clay, it helps to come up with a color palette.

Its likely youll get at least a couple of sets of earrings from each batch you stir, so make it something that really suits your style and wardrobe.

I wanted to create a couple diverse pieces every sticking to more earthy tones (muted greens, peaches, rust, marble and a little gray blue).

Color Blocking Technique for DIY Clay Jewelry

Take two separate colors of your choice. Roll each out into short, thick cylinders. Lay them side by side and gently shove them together with your hands until they cling on to each other.

Use your roller to flatten the colors together into a simple color block. From there, youll be capable to cut out enjoyment shapes and create your earrings.

And heres more specifics on how I made the color blocked earrings you see in the photos

Roll out your color-blocked clay until it is about 1/16-1/8 thick throughout.

Use a clay knife (or ancient kitchen knife) to carefully cut out two rectangles.

Mine were roughly 1/4 wide and 1 long.

So now that you own a few techniques below, heres the breakdown on how to make clay earrings in various shapes, sizes, and colors. I love how these turned out, so I hope youll discover some inspiration here

Creating Custom Colors for DIY Clay Jewelry

Use the same technique as you would for marbling, only this time, continue pushing the colors through one another (stretching, rolling, folding, repeat) until every of the colors are blending throughout with no striations.

Pay special attention to your ratios – a little black can go a endless way, while you may need a lot more white to get a more pastel palette.

And remember that adding a complimentary color can assist dull below a super bright color.

If you mess up, or take the color too far one way, no biggie! You can easily just continue adding in clay until you reach your desired tint.

Marbling Technique for DIY Clay Jewelry

Start with a midsize sample of your base color, for example, white. Select secondary colors and roll them each into little balls. Then roll each color out into clay snakes, you know, love they made you do in preschool.

Gently wrap each color around the base color and roll together with your hands.

Stretch and fold the twisted, rolled out piece of clay several times until the colors start to mix nicely. Continue stretching, rolling, folding until it looks love a smooth marbled effect.

Heres more specifics on how I made the marbled kidney bean shaped earrings you see in the photos

Roll two little balls of marbled clay, about the size of a little marble. Save the additional marbled clay for later.

Gently roll each ball into a thick, short cylinder and curve. Lightly press the rolling pin over the cylinder of clay until it flattens slightly to form a kidney bean shape.

Roll out the remaining clay until it is about 1/16-1/8 thick throughout. Use a little circular clay cutter to punch out two 1/4 circles.

If you dont own a clay cutter this size, you can also roll out two little balls of clay and press with a flat surface to get a flattened circle, or hand cut with a knife.

Instructions on How to Make Clay Earrings

Start by preheating your oven to º and lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Create your clay shapes using one of the above techniques.

For any earrings that youll be using jump rings for, this would be the time to create the holes needed To do that, take one of the earring posts, and use the sharp finish to gently create holes at the top of each shape (and the bottom if applicable).

This is where you will join them together later. The earring post alone may not make a large enough hole for the jump rings, so wiggle it around a bit to magnify the piercing a little.

Then, for every earring shapes, put on a baking sheet and bake for approximately minutes.

Make certain the clay is completely flat, otherwise youll run into problems when you add your earring posts.

And if your oven tends to run boiling, hold a extremely shut eye on them, or they might burn. Trust me, I ruined a whole batch because my oven was too boiling and I left them in too long!

Remove the earrings from the oven and let them cool. Its okay if they feel a tiny bit gummy while still boiling, just as endless as they hold their shape when you pick them up.

For adding posts to earring shapes Put a dab of super glue at the top and add your earring post. Hold firmly for about 30 seconds to make certain it completely adheres.

For adding jump rings Use your pliers to thread a jump ring into the little circular pieces, and then into the hole or holes you created for the clay shapes.

Make certain you shut off the opening so the earring doesnt come apart while wearing.

Take it Further There are lots of additional things you can do to add to your earrings. Love adding tassels with embroidery floss, using hoops instead of posts, creating more organic shapes, marbling bright colors together, etc, etc.

Sealing Myths

New clayers often assume that polymer clay needs to be sealed to protect it against water damage.

Cured polymer clay is waterproof and does not need to be sealed against moisture. Most sealers are not fully waterproof (theyre merely water resistant) and can be damaged by prolonged contact with moisture. (A quick wash is not generally a problem for a sealer, though.) If youre using polymer clay to decorate the exterior of drinking glasses, you do not need to seal the polymer clay to make it safe for washing. You do, of course, desire to hand wash any decorated glassware, but thats true for any hand-embellished glassware. Dishwashers can be beautiful harsh.

If youre making polymer clay for use in aquariums or outdoors, a sealer is not only unnecessary but will most often deteriorate well before the clay.

Polymer clay is weatherproof and will not crumble or drop apart after exposure to the elements (see the picture of my hearts, below). But the color of some clays can fade in sunlight. I would love to tell that a UV sealer will protect your work, but I do worry about the durability of the sealer itself in outdoor conditions.

Another myth is the belief that a sealer will protect a feeble polymer clay sculpture against breakage. A coating of varnish or sealer will not make your piece stronger. It will not prevent pieces from breaking off. If little pieces such as ears or arms are not properly adhered in the first put, a jacket of sealer will not assist things stay in put.

The first time the piece is dropped or roughly handled, the ears will snap correct off. I suppose if you coated a piece in a thick layer of resin, it would offer structural support. But it would also glance beautiful gloppy.

When to Seal Polymer Clay

People often desire to seal their polymer clay creations for protection against the elements or from damage during use. In most cases this is unnecessary. Once its been properly baked or cured, polymer clay becomes a durable solid plastic that is waterproof, shock resistant, and fairly tough.

Because its such a durable material, it probably wont surprise you to study that its actually more durable than any sealer that you will put on it. Sealers, varnishes, and finishes do own their purpose, but bare clay itself does not need to be sealed for protection. Here are some reasons why you would desire to seal polymer clay:

Ease of Cleaning

Polymer clay is not porous love wood or unglazed ceramic. It will not absorb and hold water. Polymer clay can, however, own fine pits in the surface, depending on the method you used to create the piece.

Some clay brands, such as Sculpey III and Souffle, tend to own a surface that appears to be porous (this is also why those brands are so grand for holding onto acrylic paint). Because of this, dirt and makeup may be hard to remove from a piece without scrubbing with soap and water. This can also be a problem when clay is created with a finely textured surface. Plus, sometimes the dyes in your makeup can permanently discolor light colored clay beads. In these cases, sealing the clay makes sense.

Change the Gloss Level

Although diverse brands of clay own diverse native gloss levels, and the technique you use can leave you with a matte or glossy surface, the easiest way to change the gloss level of your finished piece is to use a sealer that has the desired type of gloss level.

Numerous varnishes come in both glossy and matte varieties. Sometimes you will glance at a finished piece and realize that you would love it better matte or glossy and choosing the correct varnish can easily give you the effect you want.

Protect Surface Treatments

When you embellish your polymer clay project with chalks, paints, mica powders, metallic pastes or metal leaf, those treatments are sitting on the surface of the polymer clay and are not almost as durable as the polymer clay itself.

Projects using surface treatments must therefore be sealed for maximum durability. In the case of jewelry, the wearer must also be protected from any pigments, dyes, and mica coming off on their clothes or skin. If the project is purely decorative and will merely be sitting on a shelf, sealing is not imperative. But hold in mind that cleaning any accumulated dust would likely cause the surface treatments to be disturbed.

Polymer clay artists often use acrylic paint to color and embellish their projects. Does acrylic paint need to be sealed? Well, it depends.

Paint used to antique a textured surface is mostly rubbed off and the remaining paint is fairly well protected below in the nooks and crannies of the piece. In that case I would not seal it. But thin layers of acrylic paint can sometimes peel or scrape off, or will come off if the piece is washed. In those cases I would use a sealer. Even when the layer of paint is thick and strong, a sealer might give a brighter, more durable coating much in the same way that a clear jacket is used over the colored paint on your car. Youre going to be the best judge for your own specific project.

Intensify Colors or Translucency

Just love a pebble dipped in water becomes more vivid and bright, a jacket of sealer can make polymer clay appear more wealthy, deep, and colorful.

This also holds true for translucent clays. They will appear even more translucent when a sealer is used on the surface.
